Homework
Thank you so much for helping your child develop responsibility for his/her homework.
If your child misses school for any reason, handouts/work will be placed on his/her desk to take home when he/she returns to school. Since 98% of our work at school is activity based, it will not be possible to “catch your child up" on what was missed. Any handouts that come home are just that - a handout - not the missed activity or lesson that went along with it.
Please follow up with your child to be sure that the following are being completed everyday:

Any handouts that come home are just that - a handout - not the missed activity or lesson that went along with it.
Please follow up with your child to be sure that the following are being completed everyday:
- Empty green daily take-home folder and put papers where they belong at home. Immediately, return the folder to the backpack to be brought back to class the next morning. Any notes or lunch money, etc. that needs to be sent to school should be placed inside the green folder.
- Share Behavior Calendar with an adult and discuss choices daily. The calendar should be initialed on weekends by an adult at home. Behavior Calendars will be in children's green folders toward the end of September. These calendars are expected to stay taped inside the green folder for the full month to be used as a tool to communicate the types of choices children make each day with regard to behavior.
- Read, be read to, or both for at least 10 to 20 minutes every day. The goal is to foster the joy of reading. Students should be siting side-by-side with a loved one while reading (or being read to) and talking about what was read (comprehension). Eventually, book bags will come home each day and will need to be brought back to school every day. The majority of the books will be at your child's "just right" reading level, which means they shouldn't have frustration when reading. You will also see "books" that are pieces of paper inside the book bag. Beginning in October, students will track their at home reading on monthly reading trackers. If students have read at least 20 days during the month, he/she will earn a coupon for a free personal pan pizza at Pizza Hut through the Book It! program. Be sure to use the handout that was sent home at Curriculum Night to register your child. This incentive program goes through the month of March. More information about this program can be found at: http://www.bookitprogram.com/parents/default.asp.
- Practice Fundations/Word Work concepts, as needed. Please refer to the family letters that will come home for each unit. These letters should be saved throughout the school year as a reference and practice tool, as needed. These letters describe the skills we are working on and provide suggested homework activities that support our learning. Depending on your child’s skill level on the unit concept, this homework should be completed on an as needed basis, but should not be returned to school.
- Do assigned math Home Links page(s) when brought home in the green folder; and return to school the next school day. Children should get into the habit of working independently, skipping things that aren't understood and then asking an adult for explanation afterward. Adults should check homework for understanding and accuracy before it comes back to school. Please refer to the Family Letters that will come home for each unit. These letters will have all the answers to the Home Links as well as suggested games and activities that support our learning and can be enjoyed at home.
